Slow Music Meltdown HER 210503 - Moody Synth

Transitioning from a morning to an evening slot on Hollow Earth Radio a while back has been a breath of fresh air for me/my show as I no longer have to manage tracks while simultaneously doing my day job from my home office, so I can really focus on the show and see where the music takes me. I started recording the sets - here’s one from back in May with some synth heroes and local legends. Recommended for a drive or with headphones. Hope you enjoy.

Brain Fruit - 1.7
N Chambers - Myosynchron
Jonathan Fitoussi - Vents Magnetiques
Bitchin Bajas - Rias Baixas
Forma - Physicalist

KUOW mentions HER re FCC and LPFM

For those of you who don't know the initials, that is to say that local NPR radio station KUOW covered Hollow Earth Radio and other local radio stations' efforts to obtain a Low Power FM frequency to expand their existing web-streaming programming. More info here.

Adventures in Dubbing #1 - Aleks Jurczyk

Finally making some time to post about the tapes I won from Adventures in Dubbing in the Scotland via their Facebook page. I received a compelling package of cassettes all nicely packaged and full of disparate sounds to explore. I hope to make the time feature one of the cassettes on the upcoming episodes of Slow Music Meltdown on Hollow Earth Radio starting tomorrow 9/14. Broadcasts are from 12-2pm PST.

First up is Brutal Britain by Aleks Jurczyk. To quote the liner notes:

"The work ‘Brutal Britain’ was originally created as a soundtrack for a series of photographs that formed part of a piece on Brutalist Architecture by textiles designer, Emma Shannon. In keeping with the work it was created as an accompaniment to, the soundtrack was made using a field recording taken from a key example of Brutalist architecture in Glasgow, the Wyndford estate in Maryhill. This recording formed the basis for the soundtrack. It was then woven together with several live synthesised performances to form the completed piece."

It starts with a dark afterburner blast that slowly churns throughout, underneath electronics reminiscent of Wendy Carlos' work and what may be ambient recordings of birds or other wildlife appearing here and there. One embarks on a somewhat harrowing but fascinating journey - you are a bit scared, but don't want to close your eyes.

Slow Music Meltdown on Hollow Earth Radio

Starting this weekend tune in from 12-2pm Pacific time every Saturday for Slow Music Meltdown on Hollow Earth Radio!

This weekend's show is dedicated to the baby my wife and I are expecting any minute. Tender songs of love and affection, with a healthy sampling of cosmic lullaby tracks to sooth the infant in all of us....

*A note to listeners: For the meantime my show is pre-programmed using a service called Airtime and is not actually live, so unfortunately I can't take any calls or requests during the show. If you have any thoughts or requests for the weeks to come, feel free to let me know....

WXBC - Bard Radio

Once upon a time in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY, while working towards my BA in photography, I hosted a radio program on WXBC, Bard College radio. It was called, as you might have guessed, Music Meltdown.

Organizing boxes of things from times gone by, I came across old cassettes of mixtapes from before I went digital, as well as the tapes from my first 3 shows on WXBC. I'd been meaning to transfer them for ages, and finally got around to it.

Here is show # 1, with episodes 2 and 3 coming soon - collections of random, on-the-fly musical tastes from my early-middle twenties (circa 2004) that went over both the internet and AM* airwaves. Check back for more of DJ Slow's WXBC Music Meltdown with shout-outs to friends lost and kept along the way, and also watch out for the Meltdown on Hollow Earth Radio every Saturday from 12-2pm PST starting February 18th.

*(At that time WXBC was on 540am in addition to being online - not sure if that broadcast still lives or not.)
