I was asked to put together an afrobeat-inspired playlist for the closing party (11/22/19) of the ALTAR exhibition at the Jacob Lawrence Gallery,  UW. Check out the playlist below and if you see this in time I encourage you to visit the show as well - some captivating, thought-provoking work! I also provided wine from the sustainably-farmed Indaba Wines in S. Africa via my day job at GVWM.

Buy Music Club - Best of 2018

Avalon Emerson and friends made a site for creating lists using Bandcamp:

"Bandcamp is currently one of the most equitable music vendors online, discovering and buying music there is one of the best ways to support independent artists and record labels.
It would be nice to funnel year-end list-mania through a channel that actually pays people." - Avalon Emerson

In no particular order here are my standouts for 2018:

Music Meltdown @ Corvus & Co. 6/16

This mix was inspired by an album I’d had on deep repeat that was then used as the foundation to build the mix around. Sigma Flare I by Chambers (Gabriel Saloman and Michael Red) struck a chord in me for its application of ethereal and wintry textures framed in a dub sensibility. Being a huge dub reggae fan, this record got me thinking about what else in my collection had dark, haunting and/or noise elements coupled with dub effects, and as I dug into my library the theme expanded to include darker cosmic, tribal, and drone elements.

[Intro: “Willow” - Black Hat]

Raica - Tiwie
Maud Geffray - 1994
Chambers - 313
Holden - Sky Burial
Black Hat - Imaginary Friends

Jon Hassel / Brian Eno - Charm (Over "Burundi Cloud")
Sun Araw - Conga Mind
Hobo Cubes - Infatuation
African Head Charge - African Hedge Hog
Best Available Technology - Digi Hex
Pan•American - Lake Supplies

The all‐vinyl mix was built spontaneously and recorded live in one take.
