La Banda Borracha

In honor of my sister's marriage to her man Xavier this Saturday, here's a track that's an old family favorite and represents the kind of atmosphere Dre and Xavi thrive in....

Jonas Reinhardt - live in Olympia 11/5/09

It's a rare surprise these days - especially in Olympia - to go out to a show knowing little about a band and expecting much less, yet be totally surprised at how damn good they are.

Jonas Reinhardt played The Northern this past Thursday and they came correct. Their sound is both familiar and new. Familiar is the Krautrock influence, but what's new is the serious funk that they brought to it.

Jesse Reiner starts out the set with blistering and bobbing synths, Diego Gonzalez (Citay) and Damon Palermo (Mi Ami) lay down a tight bounce on bass and drums, and Phil Manley's (Trans Am) guitar both rides the rhythm and leads to the outer regions of kosmischen funk.

This line up has a record due out on Kranky early next year, which I can't wait to get my hands on. To appease my ears in the meantime, they were kind enough to give away copies of a solo synth effort that has been on loop since Thursday. I hope they don't mind that I share a track that's a standout in a record of galactic proportions, also available on Kranky.

Kill For Total Peace - Kill For

Kill For Total Peace are a band out of Paris. Their new record is out on Pan European Recording. Obvious connections to the sounds of Joy Division, Suicide, and early Pink Floyd are on the surface, but there is much more to this band than simply regurgitating the sonic excursions of their musical forebears. Their debut album is a harsh yet lush psychedelic assault on the senses that you should hear.

It also has killer marker art a la Funkadelic:

Involuntary Posts by Tarwater Series - First Installment

Thus begins a new series at Slow Music Meltdown which highlights the insightful comments and contributions of the music historian and critic known as Tarwater.

Behold:

"RE: 2 records I like

Okay, one more: Population II by Randy Holden. He briefly replaced
Leigh Stephens on guitar in some supposedly shitty late-60's iteration
of Bluer {sic} Cheer, before forming the duo* that would drop this, the Pink
Flag
of metal (seriously): half an hour long, not a wasted note,
amazing production, guitar tone, feedback control and all around
attention to sonic detail. Very minimal. Really, really loud,
regardless of volume. (They were sponsored by Sunn amps, here's the
gatefold proof:

{ }

http://www.pooterland.com/index2/looking_glass/randy_holden/Randy_PopulationII.jpg
) {sic}

Imagine two Sabbath freaks covering Electric Mud (except heavier.)
Totally rules, obviously. {Further insights beheld} here.

*The other member, Chris Lockheed, was responsible for drums and
keyboards. Live, he played them simultaneously."

Notes:
1) All editor's input within original quoted text is between "{}", and some text
hyper-linked to help elaborate the experience of reading this Involuntary Post.

2) There is in fact an earlier missive that first inspired this series, but it will
have to follow as this installment is more immediately available. Stay tuned.

3) Sorry for the weird formatting - through a series of copying and pasting, this was the best I could do to get all original text without re-typing the whole thing.

Wave Haze in Bali

Sitting poolside in Ubud, Bali, I reckon "Wave Haze" from Night Plane's forthcoming debut Chinese Shadows would be most appropriate (although a different kind of haze than that elucidated by Sr. Night Plane is felt here). I look forward to its release August 17th on Thisisnotanexit Records, as should any discerning Meltdown follower. A more detailed review may eventually follow (however discussions of indigenous Balinese music will likely takeover Slow Music Meltdown for the forseeable future.)

Please visit Acknowledged Classic for more details.

Music to Cruise in the Boat By

DJ Slow meets DJ P and his Unicorns on the shores of Lake St. Clair over the 2008 4th of July weekend in cloudy Oly, WA. Despite the gray weather, oysters and white wine were consumed on the water which inspired this mellow sunny mix that's BBQ-ready. As you can see, visiting LSC turns any hard Brooklynite into a freshwater-swimming, oyster-slurping, west coast-loving dude.

Please enjoy the mix, and I apologise for the omissions in the tracklisting as supplied by DJ P. Anyone who can name the missing tracks will have my respect, and I might even buy you a beer.

Mekons' Rocketband

Check out a recent episode of This American Life that centers around the Classifieds in two Chicago papers. Particularly enjoyable (and relevant to this blog?) is an assemblage of a band of unfamiliar musicians by Jon of Mekons fame to record Bernie Taupin / Elton Johns' "Rocketman".

"Everybody likes Elton John a little bit".

Compelling version by William Shatner:

WTF has re-located to Wrath66.com. While I could pretend to discuss the change in address and fresh approach with particular insight, I think it best for the curious reader to do his or her own investigation.

Enjoy - I sure do.

CHICROS: Radio Transmission out May 18th

(los) Chicros' latest album is a definite trip, as their mixes posted here on the Meltdown previously have indicated. I was lucky enough to be near when the record was being mastered, and no doubt these Parisian boys make a radio "concept" album that highlights their capacity to draw you in and rock you from various angles.

Check here for all the details.

We Carry On

Global financial turmoil, wars in distant or domestic lands, personal tragedy, failure or complacence, any number of discouraging obstacles. But humans have the capacity to overcome and move forward - we carry on.

I'm not posting this now because of any particular recent frustration on my own part, and this mix is in fact from last May. I just re-read the title and started thinking about what it could imply, and it's actually quite hopeful if you think about it. Heaven knows whole populations have overcome mountains more than I have ever been faced with.

~~

So this mix isn't centered around any heavy theme I preface it with above. Again I just took it on the fly and started with a track I dug off a recent acquisition and tried to embellish with whatever else was recently inspirational or at hand. It takes a mellow turn at a later point, and then fully regains its raw energy for the finale. Carry on.

we carry on - PORTISHEAD
la horse - SERGE GAINSBOURG
lavender - ONEIDA
steady as she goes - SHELLAC
spinning temple shifting - DANAVA
monza (rauf und runter) - HARMONIA
pot head pixies - GONG
le roi des mouches et la confiture de rouse - JEAN-CLAUDE VANNIER
grinderman - GRINDERMAN
oh! sweet nuthin - VELVET UNDERGROUND
will the circle be unbroken - JERRY LEE LEWIS
you don't know (demo version) - 13TH FLOOR ELEVATORS
what would they know - LIARS
ghost rider - SUICIDE
snare hangar - BATTLES
got a mile, got a mile, got an inch - DON CABALLERO
wonderful witches + language meanies - THURSTON MOORE
tonite - MC5
parchment farm - BLUE CHEER
untitled (from movement lp)- THE GOSSIP

Eddie Bo - R.I.P.

Bucket's got a hole in it - a serious hole.

New Orleans giant of funk and soul Eddie Bo passed away March 18th, leaving behind a most impressive list of songs, and a hole in your bucket.

According to Wikipedia, he "released more single records than anyone else in New Orleans other than Fats Domino." In a seriously bumpin' musical town like the Big Easy, that ain't easy. Check your bucket, and when you find the hole, fix it up with this tribute mix compiled from some of Eddie Bo's many 45's, put out by RnB45.com

Download link: From This Day On...Eddie Bo Tribute 45 Mix**

**After further research, dj slow has come across the blog which is the source of the tribute mix and includes a track listing: Second Line Social.

MOGGS: amulat EP

The wait is over. After a mind-boggling array of pressing issues, we can finally enjoy the latest MOGGS release, amulat EP, on vinyl! Although it has been frustrating being privy to the delays, it was well worth the wait. Available as digital download from iTunes since November '08, dj slow has been thoroughly enjoying this EP via pod for a while. But as any vinyl-phile can attest, the real deal is just so much better - especially when it's a completely analog recording and has been as meticulously produced as all MOGGS output is.

Aided by a different guest musician on each track, amulat EP carries the drive and focus of the previous full-length, The White Belt is Not Enough, while MOGGS and contributing friends bring new sounds to the mix that further embellish their gripping, singular take on contemporary independent music.

Have a listen to amulat EP on MySpace, and pick it up on vinyl at the MOGGS website fast, as there is a limited quantity of 300 beautifully packaged 12" records available. If you're in the Bay Area, be sure to catch them this Thursday night at Casbar in Santa Rosa, CA. Their live show will give your neck the workout it's been needing since the last time you saw them.....
